dermoid cyst vs teratoma

Malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma is a rare complication, reported to occur in 1%–2% of cases in the older literature (,15). A dermoid cyst is a developmental anomaly characterised by an accumulation of keratin, hair and variable amounts of sebum within a cyst lined by keratinised stratified squamous epithelium and adnexal skin structures (eg, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands). Pure sebum within the cyst may be hypoechoic or anechoic (,19). A dermoid cyst develops from a totipotential germ cell (a primary oocyte) that is retained within the egg sac (ovary). (a) Transverse transabdominal US image shows a heterogenous mass in the cul-de-sac (arrowheads). Dermoid, Teratoma, and Choristoma. 25, No. The ipsilateral mature cystic teratoma demonstrates suppression of the signal of the cyst contents (arrow). (b) Axial T2-weighted fast spin-echo MR image (3,000/126 [effective]) shows the large fluid (F) and solid (S) components of the mass. (c) Axial fat-saturated T1-weighted gradient-echo MR image (290/2.1) demonstrates saturation of the cyst contents (arrow). 16, No. (a) Transabdominal US image shows a heterogeneous mass containing echogenic reflectors representing hair. what facial skin problems can be associated with a teratoma dermoid? (a) Axial T1-weighted spin-echo MR image (500/11) shows a large mass of the left ovary with multiple high-signal-intensity foci (arrowheads). A minority of mature cystic teratomas will not demonstrate a sebum-filled cyst cavity (,24). However, these teratomas can also cause abdominal or pelvic pain. 4, Korean Journal of Radiology, Vol. Viewer. Another type of teratoma, the mature solid teratoma, has also been described. The ipsilateral mature cystic teratoma demonstrates suppression of the signal of the cyst contents (arrow). (d) Photograph of the gross specimen shows yellowish, pasty sebaceous material (black arrowhead) and hair (white arrowheads) within the cyst cavity, findings that account for the fat echogenicity and signal intensity seen at US and MR imaging. At initial manifestation, immature teratomas are typically larger (14–25 cm) than mature cystic teratomas (average, 7 cm) (,12),(,38). Teeth are seen in the center of the Rokitansky nodule and account for the calcification seen in b. For the sake of simplicity, both are discussed in this article, as much of the literature combines the two entities. A mature teratoma often contains several different types of tissue such as skin, muscle, and bone. 7, Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences, Vol. 5, Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI, Vol. (d) Photograph of the gross specimen shows yellowish, pasty sebaceous material (black arrowhead) and hair (white arrowheads) within the cyst cavity, findings that account for the fat echogenicity and signal intensity seen at US and MR imaging. Fat is reported in 93% of cases and teeth or other calcifications in 56% (,25). A dermoid cyst develops from a totipotential germ cell (a primary oocyte) that is retained within the egg sac (ovary). (d) CT scan through the abdominal mass shows an immature teratoma (arrowheads) with foci of fat (arrow) and scattered calcifications. Epidermoid cyst. Ovarian teratomas or ovarian dermoid cysts are common teratomas and have three distinct types: mature ovarian teratoma, immature ovarian teratoma, and struma ovarii tumor, a subtype consisting of thyroid tissue. The hemorrhagic endometriosis (open arrow) still has high signal intensity. (c) Axial T2-weighted MR image (5,200/98 [effective]) shows the mass with a solid appearance (arrow). 19, No. 2, 16 December 2015 | Insights into Imaging, Vol. 62, No. Dermoid cysts, also known as dermoid tumors, are rare benign congenital cystic masses of embryological origin that represent 0.04-0.6% of all intracranial tumors. The smaller mass demonstrates low-signal-intensity “shading” (open arrow), a finding that is typical of endometrioma. (a) Sagittal transabdominal US image shows an echogenic mass with sound attenuation (arrows). A round Rokitansky nodule is seen (arrow) and has a feathery appearance at the fatty interface where the hair arises from it (arrowhead). 30, Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Vol. Dermoid cyst: usually mature teratoma which resembles skin; some use these terms interchangeably Gliomatosis peritonei: peritoneal implants exclusively composed of mature glial tissue; benign if all tissue is mature and other teratomatous elements are absent 4, Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI, Vol. Figure 1a.
